J.P. Morgan Chase Has 36% Profit RiseJ.P. Morgan Chase said its second quarter net income rose 36% to $2.72 billion, or 28 cents a share, as revenue rose to $25.62 billion from $18.4 billion. The company had record first half revenue, and had solid performance from commercial banking, asset management, and retail banking.

Jobless Claims FallThe number of U.S. workers filing new claims for jobless benefits fell sharply last week to the lowest level since January. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits fell 47,000 to a seasonally adjusted 522,000 in the week ended July 11. Analysts had expected 565,000 new claims.

Philly Fed Index Weaker In JulyThe manufacturing sector in the Philadelphia region slowed in July. The Philly Fed index fell to negative 7.5 in July from negative 2.2 in June. Analysts were expecting the index to fall 3.3. The index has been negative since September 2008.
